Livingston County United Way had an awe inspiring group of 689 Volunteers at the 20th annual Day of Caring held on August 10th. Day of Caring is the largest one-day community service event in the entire county. In a single day, these amazing volunteers completed 58 projects, including replacing doors, toilets, sinks, painting, household cleaning, yard clean up, deck repairs and so much more!

Each year, we receive many project requests from seniors and people with disabilities that simply want to live safely in their homes.  Often this is yard work or light cleaning or this year even a couple doors that were broken.  These simple supports can make a huge difference.  One homeowner shares:

My lawn mower broke and there was some significant overgrowth that I was unable to do on my own.  The group of young ladies were wonderful and worked their hands off.  I seriously thought the job was bigger than anyone could handle in a day, but these young people impressed me beyond my expectations.  I felt so blessed.

To see our local businesses give their employees the opportunity to volunteer during normal work hours, allows them to build relationships with their co-workers and work as a team in a way that cannot be done at the workplace or at a seminar. This value can be seen by the 36 companies that brought a team this year!  Even our local high schools teams come out to make a difference, with 6 teams joining us this year.

One of our volunteer leaders had two young men (18 years old) helping him and he shared that they were willing to learn every tool they used and how to do every repair they made.  The Gentleman said the day was so fulfilling because he had the opportunity to make a difference not only to the homeowner, but to these two young men as well.  The young men also said they learned so much and felt great about what they were able to do. This is exactly what we want to see happen. Our volunteers are motivated to make a real impact in the community!

We know without the generosity of the volunteers and local businesses the Day of Caring would not be possible! We also want to thank the Sponsors whose support enabled us to provide materials to make the needed repairs at these homes.
